"The Da Vinci Code" meets "Our Town"
Local historian and general nutcase Fred Stark has been found dead in his beloved, lovingly restored 18th-century courthouse in the small town of Winslow, Michigan. The suicide note beside his body is packed with obscure historical references, prompting beleaguered police chief Skippy Bronson to call for expert help.
Enter Leda Morris, part-time history teacher, closet organizer and organizing freak. She never could stand Fred, who was her ex-fiance's uncle and a self-described "sixth-generation Winslowite." But the note is intriguing— and almost completely incomprehensible — and she finds herself researching the clues despite herself. Leda and her ex, Jeffrey Stark, attempt to sort out the bizarre riddles and follow a trail of clues hidden in “historic sites” throughout the town. (One historic site is a gas station with a big fiberglass oil rig on it.)
So welcome to Winslow, Mich., population 4,947, barely limping along economically since the Dodge air-conditioning vent factory closed in '92. Meet Winslow's secret, ruthless Society and learn about this small town's most valuable historic relic.
Wow. You are so brave, I am in awe. First that you are together enough to be able to do this with smallish child, but more that you have the chutzpah to post it in your blog.
ReplyDelete(I had to buy a secret laptop so that my husband wouldn't even know that i was going to try to get back into writing again! I am actually "out of the closet" enough so husband & kid know that if they want to eat this month its up to them because I'm a NaNo. Good thing they both cook.
I can't actually talk about my novel or even let anybody read a word until after its done and I've done at least 1 clean-up revision.)
Sadly, as a NaNo newbie I don't yet have time to read your blog (my own are atrophy-ing and I have to get a bit ahead so I can do a few posts so they don't wither and die)... but I've bookmarked your because I willl be back when it's all over.
Probably why I want to come back and read your Fred Code is because it sounds like it will be funny, and somehow there never seems to be enough "funny" in my world.
Have fun & good luck,
regards,
laurel
Hi - I followed your link to the article about people living off of their severance packages. The saddest thing is that there are so many out there who haven't hit the bottom yet. Who knows what will happen when those people stop buying?!
ReplyDeleteI'll keep my eyes open for other potential characters. Your story is so much more interesting than mine!
